Teagasc commits to protecting vital Irish soil health
Teagasc has formally endorsed the EU Soil Mission Manifesto, strengthening its pledge to assist farmers and land managers in preserving soil health. This initiative emphasises the crucial role of soil in sustaining food production, biodiversity, and climate resilience, as the organisation aligns its research efforts with broader European environmental objectives.

The signing occurs during Irish Soil Health Week, which ran from 21 September to 25 September 2026. This activity serves as a precursor to European Mission Soil Week, a significant event hosted by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine alongside Teagasc in Dublin on 17 and 18 November 2026. The manifesto aims to establish 100 soil living labs and lighthouses by 2030 to combat degradation and pollution across the continent.

Teagasc leadership, including Professor Frank O’Mara, Dr Karen Daly, and Dr Veronica Nyhan, underscored the importance of translating scientific research into practical, on-farm solutions. Through collaborative projects like MARVIC and SoilHarmony, the organisation continues to develop strategies that support sustainable farming systems. Further information regarding the manifesto and its objectives is available on the official European Commission website.
