New funding initiative bolsters national digital defence capabilities
A major nationwide initiative has been unveiled to fortify the country against increasingly sophisticated digital threats and secure a prosperous technological future. The newly established Research Ireland-Cyber Security Innovation Challenge, backed by a €3.9 million fund, aims to empower multidisciplinary research teams to engineer groundbreaking security solutions for the State and wider society.

Spearheaded by Minister of State Catherine Ardagh alongside Research Ireland and the National Cyber Security Centre, the programme encourages visionary collaboration between academic experts, industry leaders, and public bodies. Participating teams will initially secure up to €50,000 for concept validation before advancing to larger funding phases, culminating in a €1 million prize designed to accelerate real-world implementation.

Applications are open and must be submitted via the official Research Ireland online grants system before the closing deadline of 19 January 2027 at 13:00, with successful projects scheduled to commence in June 2027.
