Teagasc clinics offer guidance on Irish farm succession
Following a decade of support for over 20,000 farmers, the annual Teagasc Transferring the Family Farm clinics are set to return this October. Despite various governmental and European incentives aimed at rejuvenating the sector, the average age of the Irish farming population remains a significant concern. To address this, families are invited to attend these complimentary sessions, which offer private, one-to-one consultations with industry professionals to help secure the future of their holdings.

The series kicks off at the Ardboyne Hotel in Navan, County Meath, on Tuesday, 6 October. James McDonnell, a farm management specialist at Teagasc, emphasised that these events serve as a vital resource for families to gather information on taxation, state entitlements, and the Fair Deal scheme. Attendees will have the opportunity to consult with local solicitors, accountants, and mediators, while representatives from the Citizens Information Board and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will be present to provide specialised guidance on partnerships and pension planning.

Ruth Fennell, a collaborative farming specialist, highlighted that successful succession often involves a gradual transition of management and ownership to the next generation. The clinics will provide detailed insights into various collaborative structures that can facilitate this handover. Interested parties can secure their attendance through the official Teagasc website or by contacting their local advisory office. All sessions are scheduled to commence at 10am, with the Decision Support Service joining the programme at specific locations in Navan, Naas, and Kiltimagh.
