Castletownbere water mains replacement underway
Uisce Éireann has begun critical works to replace ageing and faulty water mains in Castletownbere, ensuring a more dependable water supply for residents and enterprises. The project involves laying 2.3 kilometres of modern pipes along the L4935 and R572 roads in Felane West, designed to strengthen the network and reduce interruptions.

The existing infrastructure was vulnerable to bursts and leaks, causing frequent supply disruptions and wastage of treated drinking water. Jack Cronin of Uisce Éireann highlighted that the upgrades will significantly reduce leakage and provide the community with a more reliable water service for years ahead. "Every pipe we replace aims to deliver water that people can trust every day, supporting homes and businesses alike," he said.

Construction is being carried out by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd, with completion anticipated by October. New water service connections will be installed from the public mains to customers' property boundaries. While disruption will be minimised, traffic management measures will be in place to safeguard the public and workers, maintaining access for local and emergency vehicles. Customers seeking updates can contact Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 or visit the Water Supply Updates section on their website. This upgrade is part of a wider effort to tackle leaks across Ireland's extensive pipe network, which has seen national leakage rates fall from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
