Teagasc advances water quality campaign nationwide
At the Environment Ireland® Conference held in Croke Park on 3 September, Noel Meehan, Head of Water Quality Knowledge Transfer at Teagasc, emphasised the vital role of local stakeholders in improving water quality within their catchments. He underlined the necessity for farmers, industry representatives, and the public to take ownership and deliver tangible results.

Meehan provided an overview of the Better Farming for Water Campaign, which was launched in 2024 at the request of then Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D. The campaign adopts a whole-of-industry approach, focusing on eight key catchments: Boyne, Barrow, Nore, Slaney, Suir, Blackwater, Lee, and Bandon-Ilen.

Built upon six pillars—communications, research, knowledge transfer, upskilling, awareness building, and stakeholder engagement—the campaign supports the adoption of practices that enhance water bodies impacted by agricultural activities. Each catchment operates through a Catchment Implementation Group, comprising a delivery team and an oversight committee, which collaboratively drive the catchment-specific action plans, ensuring effective coordination and monitoring progress towards ecological goals.
