The Department of Health has confirmed a landmark 108 million euro increase for mental health services, bringing the total national allocation to a record 1.657 billion euro. This substantial financial boost will drive a significant expansion of community-based care, prioritising suicide prevention, early intervention, youth services, and specialist clinical programmes across the country.
A central focus of the new fiscal package is a 10 million euro investment dedicated to bolstering crisis supports. This will enable the rollout of the Suicide Crisis Assessment Nurse service in every county, alongside the establishment of two new Crisis Resolution Teams in Wexford and North Tipperary. Furthermore, six new Solace Crisis Cafés will open their doors in various regions, offering welcoming, non-clinical environments for individuals experiencing acute emotional distress.
Additional provisions include the recruitment of 285 new clinicians and the deployment of six specialist nursing teams within hospital emergency departments. Minister Mary Butler emphasised that robust ring-fencing measures will protect these vital posts from wider budgetary pressures, ensuring that individuals across Ireland receive timely, compassionate support close to home.
