Maximising crop yields through precise plant counts

Achieving top harvest yields hinges on well-established crops rather than just seed rates, experts advise. Farmers across Ireland are urged to monitor plant emergence and adjust sowing strategies based on detailed field observations for improved results.

Maximising crop yields through precise plant counts
Michael Hennessy, Head of Crops Knowledge Transfer at Teagasc, highlights the critical role of well-established crops in securing maximum yields. He emphasises that while seed rates provide a starting point, the real measure of success is the number of plants that actually emerge and establish in the field.

Farmers are encouraged to calibrate drills accurately, prepare seedbeds meticulously, and focus on detailed monitoring of plant populations at the one to two leaf stage. Using simple tools like a 0.2m² hoop to count plants across multiple field points enables growers to calculate establishment percentages and identify issues such as poor seed placement or adverse weather conditions.

Shay Phelan adds that recording establishment data over several seasons is invaluable, allowing farmers to tailor seed rates to their specific soil types, cultivation methods, and climatic conditions. This ongoing assessment helps mitigate risks, optimise seed use, and ultimately enhance crop competitiveness and yield potential on Irish farms.
