Laois farmers share dairy secrets at October farm walk
A hands-on farm walk hosted by father-and-son duo Harry and Joe Lalor will take place in Ballacolla, Co. Laois, next Thursday at 11am. The event, held on their Knockamullin farm, offers farmers a chance to see first-hand how the Lalors achieve exceptional milk solids output—500kg per cow—despite their relatively recent entry into dairy farming.

The Lalors are inaugural participants in the FarmElevate Lighthouse Farm network, a joint initiative between Tirlán and Teagasc designed to boost productivity, profitability and sustainability through shared learning. Discussions will centre on winter fodder budgeting, autumn grass planning and practical steps to enhance milk quality, while also addressing new slurry storage regulations and water quality improvements.

As one of eight selected Lighthouse Farms, the Lalors’ operation exemplifies best practices in grassland management, breeding, labour efficiency and nutrient management. Their farm walk provides a rare opportunity for fellow suppliers to adopt proven techniques and strengthen their own business resilience.
