Kerry dairy farmer William Dennehy was crowned the overall victor at the Teagasc and FBD Environmentally Sustainable Farmer of the Year awards ceremony held in County Laois. His enterprise serves as a brilliant blueprint for modern agriculture, demonstrating how commercial productivity and rigorous ecological protection can successfully complement one another on a working family farm.
Operating a spring-calving herd that achieved impressive milk solids production alongside strong breeding metrics, Dennehy has placed innovation at the heart of his daily operations. Over half of his milking platform incorporates clover, nearly all nitrogen is applied as protected urea, and targeted measures such as riparian buffers and reedbeds protect the nearby Brown Flesk River.
Leaders from across the agricultural and environmental sectors praised the finalists for blazing a trail toward a greener future for Irish farming. Further details regarding the winning enterprise and upcoming advisory initiatives are available on the official Teagasc website.
