Farmyard manure spreading deadline nears fast
With the 1st of November fast approaching, farmers are reminded that spreading farmyard manure (FYM) must cease by 31 October, provided weather and ground conditions are favourable. From this date, the closed period for FYM spreading will commence across Ireland, lasting until reopening dates in January or February depending on county-specific nitrates zones.

Róisín McManus, ASSAP Advisor for Tipperary, highlights the importance of applying FYM correctly to enhance soil fertility and reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers while safeguarding water quality. The Agricultural Sustainability Support and Advisory Programme (ASSAP) offers free, confidential advice to farmers on nutrient and land management aimed at minimising nutrient losses to waterways.

Farmers are advised to avoid spreading FYM on waterlogged, frozen, or flooded ground, and to respect increased buffer zones near surface waters during the final fortnight of spreading. Storing FYM on-site over winter requires suitable concrete bases and effluent collection systems, with clean rainwater diverted away to reduce effluent volume. Importantly, field storage of FYM is prohibited during the closed period, so all manure heaps must be removed before 1 November. Planning and timely contractor arrangements are essential, but spreading should not proceed under unsuitable conditions.
