James Skehan, a farmer from County Clare, has significantly enhanced the performance of his spring-calving suckler-to-beef operation by adopting a series of practical improvements. Over recent years, he has shifted from selling weanlings to finishing cattle himself, invested in improved grazing infrastructure, and focused on boosting soil fertility to optimise the resources on his farm.
Taking part in the Teagasc Future Beef Programme has allowed James to benchmark his results and implement changes that have reduced labour while maintaining high animal performance. His approach includes breeding a compact, efficient herd, careful grassland management, and prioritising herd health alongside preparing calves for weaning.
James balances his farming activities with an off-farm career and is preparing to host the Teagasc National Future Beef Farm Walk on Friday, 4th September at 6 pm.
