Cavan farmers face strict winter slurry spreading bans
Local agricultural operators in County Cavan are being reminded that the seasonal prohibited period for landspreading fertilisers is now underway. Designed to comply with national Nitrates Regulations, these restrictions are essential for safeguarding local waterways and preventing nutrient loss when ground conditions and plant demand are at their lowest.

Under the guidelines, the closed periods vary depending on the material used. The restriction for chemical fertilisers ran from 15 September 2026 and continues until 14 February 2027, while the ban for organic fertilisers such as slurry and silage effluent commenced on 1 October 2026 and runs until 31 January 2027. Further restrictions apply to farmyard manure from 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, and to soiled water throughout December 2026. Additionally, strict buffer zones must be maintained near lakes, rivers, and private wells to prevent contamination.

Because all drinking water supplies in the county rely on surface or groundwater sources, authorities emphasise the importance of community compliance to protect human health and the environment. Anyone seeking further guidance on the regulations can reach out to the Environmental Services Section using the contact details available on the official website.
