Thurles Sarsfields end title drought in style
Thurles Sarsfields triumphantly ended a nine-year wait for the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship title, defeating Moycarkey-Borris by eight points in front of nearly 9,400 fans at FBD Semple Stadium. The match began spectacularly for Sarsfields when Eoin Purcell netted a goal within the opening 11 seconds, setting the tone for a dominant display that culminated in a 1-19 to 1-11 win.

Under the guidance of manager Pádraic Maher, Sarsfields’ defence was resolute, limiting Moycarkey-Borris to just 19 shots despite a late flurry of attacks. This victory marks a generational shift for the club, with only four players from the 2017 four-in-a-row winning team starting, including veteran goalkeeper Patrick McCormack. At 42, McCormack was appearing in his 15th final and secured his ninth championship medal.

Moycarkey-Borris, making their first county final appearance since 1984, faced an uphill battle from the outset. Despite Joe Maher’s crucial goal midway through the first half, Sarsfields maintained control, led by Purcell’s impressive scoring tally of 1-3 at halftime. The match featured key contributions from Paddy Creedon and Paul Maher, while Ronan Maher’s late introduction added further solidity. Looking ahead, Thurles Sarsfields will travel to face either the Clare or Cork champions on 15 November, aiming to build on this landmark success.
