Irish families ride new wave of surfing spirit
Irish Surfing has successfully launched innovative programmes designed to encourage children and their parents to embrace surfing as a shared family activity. Supported by the Sport NI Systems Partners Investment and funded by the National Lottery, the initiative targeted 8-14 year olds from Belleek, Garrison, and the wider Fermanagh community.

Held at Rossnowlagh Beach in Donegal, the sessions ran over four consecutive Sundays, where the 24 youth places were fully booked alongside 18 adult spots, catering to participants aged 18 to 76. Families benefitted from simultaneous junior and adult programmes, with adults attending classes via the Fin McCool Surf School while their children surfed nearby.

Carla Magee, Irish Surfing Development Officer for Northern Ireland, emphasised the significance of breaking down participation barriers and fostering confidence in sea-based activities. Parents like Eleanor, Carina, and Clare shared how the programme boosted their skills, mental and physical well-being, and created lasting enthusiasm for surfing. Following the course, participants were invited to join Rossnowlagh Surf Club at a discounted rate, ensuring continued access to equipment and coaching. This community-focused development owes its success to ongoing National Lottery funding, which channels over £33 million weekly into positive causes.
