Mikey Butler is set to lead Ireland as captain in the upcoming Hurling-Shinty International against Scotland, scheduled for Saturday evening at Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The Kilkenny defender, who had never anticipated playing the hybrid code, describes the chance to represent and captain his country as a profound honour.
Butler recalls receiving the news of his captaincy from coach Eamon O’Shea, an announcement warmly received by his teammates. “Playing for Ireland in shinty is special, and being captain makes it that bit even more special,” he reflects, highlighting the pride he feels in this unique role.
Despite having no prior experience with the compromise code, Butler and his fellow squad members have quickly forged a strong team spirit. He praises the camaraderie among players from counties including Fermanagh, Derry, Down, and Kerry, many of whom bring considerable shinty match experience and accolades such as All-Star awards. Adapting to the rules, particularly the prohibition on handling the ball, posed an initial challenge, but Butler has embraced the nuances of playing strictly off the stick, underscoring the evolving nature of this thrilling contest.
