Preview of this weekend’s provincial club championships
This weekend will feature several crucial provincial club quarter-finals across Connacht, Ulster, Leinster, and Munster. Key matchups include St Brigid’s Roscommon defending their title and Kilkenny’s Ballyhale Shamrocks aiming to continue their dominant form.
Connacht Club SFC quarter-final
St Brigid's of Roscommon will host St Mary's from Sligo at Dr Hyde Park at 1.30pm. Having recovered impressively from last year's All-Ireland Final heartbreak, St Brigid’s, led by Conor Hand, Brian Stack, Shane Cunnane, Eddie Nolan, and Ben O’Carroll, are strong favourites. St Mary’s, managed by Mark Breheney, are well organised but lack the firepower of the Roscommon champions.
Ulster Club SFC quarter-finals
At Brewster Park at 5pm, Erne Gaels (Fermanagh) face St Eunan's (Donegal). Despite Donegal clubs’ historically poor Ulster record, St Eunan’s boast a strong spine featuring Shaun Patton, Caolan Ward, and the O'Donnells, aiming for provincial success after their county final win. Erne Gaels, three-time county champions, have high-quality players like the Kelm brothers and Dan McCann, promising a tough contest.
At Kingspan Breffni at 7.15pm, Gowna (Cavan) host Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh). Crossmaglen, favourites following their county final triumph, combine experienced stars such as Oisin and Rian O’Niall with emerging talent like Harry Cumiskey and Keelan McEntee. Gowna, under Vinny Corey, have been high scorers and well drilled, setting the stage for a potentially thrilling encounter.
Sunday, 8 November
Connacht Club SFC quarter-final
Salthill-Knocknacarra (Galway) welcome Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin's (Leitrim) to Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada at 1.30pm. Salthill-Knocknacarra, buoyed by a dramatic county final win featuring Tomo Culhane, possess county talent including John Maher, Matthew Thompson, and Rob Finnerty. Ballinamore’s experienced lineup includes Paul Honeyman and Tom Prior, and home advantage may assist them, but the Galway champions remain favourites.
Leinster Club SHC quarter-finals
In Mullingar at Cusack Park (1.30pm), Westmeath champions Lough Lene Gaels face Shelmaliers (Wexford). Lough Lene have been competitive provincially and seek an upset against a Shelmaliers side led by influential captain Conor Hearne.
At O'Moore Park (2pm), Laois’s Harps take on Kilkenny’s Shamrocks Ballyhale. The Shamrocks, dominant in their county final with stars like TJ Reid and Eoin Cody, are expected to prevail against a promising young Harps team that play an attacking style.
Dr Cullen Park (2.30pm) hosts Mount Leinster Rangers (Carlow) versus Kilmacud Crokes (Dublin). Although Mount Leinster’s Chris Nolan is a key threat, Kilmacud’s overall quality and bench strength might decide the outcome.
At St Conleth's Park (3.30pm), Kildare champions Naas meet Offaly’s Kilcormac-Killoughey. Naas, under new manager Mark Dowling, could challenge if they contain KK’s talisman Adam Screeney.
Munster Club SFC quarter-finals
Fraher Field (2pm) will see Waterford’s Rathgormack face Clare’s Éire Óg Inis. Last year’s tight encounter and Mark McInerney’s scoring prowess suggest another close contest.
At Páirc Uí Rinn (1.15pm), Cork champions Nemo Rangers will meet Tipperary’s Loughmore-Castleiney. Nemo, with dangerous forwards including Mark Cronin and Luke Horgan, are favoured against a spirited Loughmore-Castleiney side.
Ulster Club SFC quarter-finals
Reigning Ulster champions Scotstown (Monaghan) take on Magherafelt (Derry) at Clones (1.30pm). Expect a tight battle with Scotstown’s experience and Rory Beggan’s place-kicking potentially decisive.
Edendork (Tyrone) face St Brigid's (Antrim) at Dungannon (5.30pm). St Brigid’s, recent Antrim champions, meet a strong Edendork team relying on Darren McCurry’s scoring.
