Cora Staunton eyes future in coaching roles
Sport remains a central focus for Cora Staunton, who recently reflected on her coaching journey after the Ballina Stephenites management team, led by Niall Heffernan, stepped down. Having played a key role as coach and selector during their triumphant run, Staunton expressed her eagerness to continue coaching. "Since I returned from Australia, I’ve been involved in coaching and I definitely want to stay connected to it," she said. "My time with Ballina was incredible, working alongside David Clarke, Niall Heffernan, and many talented players. Winning three consecutive county titles was a special achievement, and I’m sure you’ll see me coaching again soon."

Staunton also highlighted the significance of Lisa Fallon’s appointment to Éamon Fitzmaurice’s Galway management team in breaking down barriers for women at the top levels of Gaelic football coaching. "It’s crucial that more women get these opportunities," she remarked. "I was fortunate that Niall gave me a chance with Ballina, perhaps helped by my playing reputation. But there are many skilled female coaches without a profile who deserve a shot. Seeing people like Lisa in prominent roles can only help open doors for others."

On 6 November 2026, Staunton will be inducted into the Gaelic Writers’ Association Ladies Football Hall of Fame, a recognition she approaches with humility. "I don’t dwell on past achievements," she said. "This honour is more for my friends, family, and club who supported me throughout my career. I’ve been blessed with wonderful coaches, teammates, and loved ones. While I’m a bit shy about the limelight, it’s lovely to reflect on the journey and those who helped me along the way."

Cora Staunton’s legacy as a four-time All-Ireland winner and 11-time All-Star remains iconic, and her commitment to advancing women in coaching promises to inspire the next generation of Gaelic football leaders.
