The Dohenys GAA Club is set to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sam Maguire’s passing with a special weekend of events from 5th to 7th February 2027. These celebrations will pay tribute to the legendary Dunmanway figure whose name is forever linked with the iconic Sam Maguire Cup, emblematic of Gaelic football excellence.

Organised by the club’s Sam Maguire Commemorations Sub-Committee, the weekend will gather GAA members, historians, schools, public officials, and visitors from across Ireland and overseas. Supported by the GAA’s National History & Commemorations Committee, the event will be graced by Uachtarán CLG Jarlath Burns, highlighting the significance of this milestone.

Highlights include the unveiling of a bronze bust of Maguire, the official opening of the Sam Maguire Walkway around Sam Maguire Park, a historical symposium featuring leading GAA scholars, and a commemorative match between Cork and London GAA teams. An ecumenical service, wreath-laying ceremony, heritage tours, and community cultural activities will also enrich the programme. Chairman Mark Farr expressed pride in honouring Maguire’s indelible connection to Dunmanway, while PRO Daniel O'Donovan emphasised the importance of celebrating his legacy locally and globally. The club invites local groups and businesses to participate, with further event details to be announced in the coming months.
