Seán Fox, the two-time Sigerson Cup winning manager, has been closely observing the Ryan Cup under its new experimental rules. Leading DCU again this season, Fox has seen firsthand how innovations like four-point goals, short kick-outs, the 'back-court' rule, and restrictions on hand-passing have influenced the matches.
In a recent Round 2 game, DCU secured a commanding victory over ATU Galway with a scoreline of 3-24 to 4-8, showcasing the impact of these changes. Fox expressed that none of the new rules irritate him, though he would have been content if the regulations had remained unchanged.
Nonetheless, Fox is eager to capitalise on the trial to benefit DCU. He highlighted the rule allowing only three consecutive hand-passes before a kick-pass as a positive development, encouraging players to think more strategically. "Our team consists of athletes who thrive on speed and skill, not physicality," Fox said. "This approach is likely to accelerate our style of play, which we welcome as it aligns with the fast-flowing nature of Sigerson football."
