Uisce Éireann is actively working to lift the Boil Water Notice currently in place for the Inishturk Public Water Supply. This advisory was issued on 14 August due to mechanical faults at the island’s water treatment facility, impacting around 41 customers. Teams from Uisce Éireann, alongside drinking water compliance experts and the HSE, are addressing the issues to ensure public health remains protected.
Remedial work is scheduled to commence next week, involving the installation of new filter media critical to the purification process. Following these upgrades, a period of 10 to 14 days of water sampling and testing will begin, after which the Boil Water Notice may be withdrawn, subject to HSE approval. Colette Scahill of Uisce Éireann expressed gratitude to residents and visitors for their patience during this time and emphasised the priority placed on health and safety.
Customers are reminded that while the notice remains, water must be boiled before use for drinking, food preparation, teeth brushing, and ice making. Guidance includes:
• Boil water vigorously and cool before use
• Use boiled water for salads and uncooked foods
• Avoid using hot tap water for consumption
• Take care when bathing children to prevent swallowing water
• Prepare infant formula with boiled or bottled water (not natural mineral water unless necessary)
Uisce Éireann urges customers to stay informed via their website, social media @IWCare, or the 24/7 helpline at 1800 278 278. Vulnerable customers registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct notifications about water safety advisories.
