The Office of Public Works (OPW) participated once again in the 2026 National Ploughing Championships, which took place from 15 to 17 September in Tullamore, County Offaly. Visitors to the OPW stand experienced a variety of interactive displays, including LEGO models demonstrating flood relief schemes, virtual reality tours of Ireland’s heritage sites, and a dedicated zone showcasing OPW properties across local communities.
Under the theme ‘Your Government, Your Community’, the OPW emphasised its commitment to supporting communities by preserving heritage and protecting the environment for future generations. Minister of State Kevin “Boxer” Moran highlighted the significance of the event in bringing together people from all walks of life and encouraged attendees to engage with the stand’s interactive features, which also included detailed information on career paths within the OPW.
A standout attraction was the LEGO Catchment Model, illustrating the science behind flood prevention through engineering and nature-based solutions. Virtual reality goggles allowed visitors to explore iconic sites such as the Céide Fields, the Battle of the Boyne, Brú na Bóinne, and Kilkenny Castle from within the tent. Additionally, the new Property Zone offered insights into OPW-managed properties embedded in communities. For those considering a career with the OPW, the HR team was available to discuss apprenticeships, graduate engineering programmes, and various operational roles such as guides and gardeners. The OPW stand was located at Block 4, Row 7, Stand 139.
