Donegal launches new initiative to combat loneliness
On 10th September 2026, HSE Connecting for Life Donegal, in collaboration with An Garda Síochána, An Post, and ALONE, launched a vital Loneliness Initiative aimed at assisting older adults who may feel isolated or disconnected within their communities. The event took place at An Grianán Theatre in Letterkenny and coincided with World Suicide Prevention Day and Green Ribbon Month, underscoring the importance of mental health and wellbeing.

This initiative highlights the crucial role neighbours, community groups, postal workers, and others regularly interacting with older people play in recognising signs of loneliness and offering timely support. It aims to encourage Donegal communities to watch out for one another and act promptly when someone appears isolated. The programme ensures that older individuals are aware of where to turn, who to contact, and which supports are available to them.

Inspector Paul Tierney of An Garda Síochána emphasised the Gardaí’s commitment to reassuring and supporting older residents living alone, urging anyone feeling vulnerable to reach out for help. Seán Moynihan, CEO of ALONE, described loneliness as a public health issue affecting mental and physical wellbeing, while John Lafferty from An Post recognised the essential role postal workers have in providing regular human contact. Resource Officer Ciara Wray reminded that small acts of kindness and simple conversations can be lifelines for those feeling unseen. Support is available for anyone aged 60 or over, with ALONE reachable at 0818 222 024 for advice and assistance.
