The Joint Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration released a landmark report today outlining 47 crucial recommendations designed to transform the landscape of victim support across the State. Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Matt Carthy emphasised that the inquiry uncovered widespread difficulties, with victims frequently enduring complex bureaucratic hurdles, frustrating delays, and inconsistent communication when trying to access vital information and compensation.

At the heart of the report is a strong call to completely overhaul the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme by placing it on a statutory footing and establishing an independent body to administer payments. Furthermore, the committee has urged the government to develop a comprehensive National Victims of Crime Strategy alongside an Independent Victims Commissioner or Ombudsman. Special attention was also dedicated to safeguarding child victims and witnesses through specialised pathways and child-centred procedures.

To ensure these proposed reforms translate into tangible improvements, the document advocates for recurring trauma-informed training for all frontline personnel. Members of the public can examine the full set of recommendations by reviewing the complete documentation available on the official website of the Houses of the Oireachtas.
