From today, landowners and occupiers across Westmeath are reminded that the annual window for hedge and verge cutting has begun. The permitted period, running from 1 September 2026 to 28 February 2027, is the only time when such work can be carried out under Section 40 of the Wildlife Act 1976.
Under Section 70 of the Roads Act 1993, property owners must ensure any hedges, trees or structures along public roads do not pose a risk to road users. Roadside hedges requiring trimming should be cut back immediately, with all cuttings removed from verges and roads. Adequate signposting must also be provided to alert passers-by. Similarly, roadside trees should be inspected by qualified personnel, with any hazardous branches addressed promptly to prevent potential injury.
Landowners remain liable for any damage or injury caused by neglected hazards on their property. Failure to comply with these obligations may result in enforcement action, including the issuing of a Hedge Cutting Notice. Where Japanese Knotweed is present, cutting must not take place at any time of year, and ground disturbance is strictly prohibited. Locations of this invasive species on public roads should be reported to the Municipal District Office in Mullingar (044 933 2000) or Athlone (090 644 2100).
