Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill have officially opened a new HSE Surgical Hub in Cork, marking a significant advancement in regional healthcare infrastructure. This facility is designed to serve the South West Health Region, offering a streamlined pathway for elective care that remains protected from the operational pressures typically faced by acute hospitals.
Operational activity is scheduled to commence on 29 September, with a phased introduction of services. Once the centre reaches full capacity, it is projected to deliver approximately 8,000 day-case procedures, 5,700 minor operations, and over 18,400 outpatient consultations annually. Patients will benefit from a modern, efficient environment where they can undergo treatments such as hernia repairs or pain relief injections and return home on the same day.
This initiative forms a core component of the national Sláintecare Elective Care Programme, which seeks to separate routine procedures from emergency services to ensure consistent, high-quality treatment. With similar centres already functioning in Dublin and further sites planned for Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Sligo, and Letterkenny, the programme is steadily expanding to ensure that elective care capacity meets the growing demands of the Irish public.
