HSE Mid West begins winter vaccination drive
The Health Service Executive (HSE) Mid West has officially commenced its 2026-2027 Winter Vaccination Programme, providing flu and COVID-19 vaccines to help shield the population from severe illness throughout the winter season. Vaccines are now accessible to eligible individuals, including those aged 60 and over, people with underlying health conditions, healthcare workers, pregnant women, and children aged 2 to 17 years.

Last winter, the region recorded 1,780 confirmed flu cases, resulting in 839 hospitalisations, 11 intensive care admissions, and 30 deaths linked to the virus. In response, the HSE emphasises the importance of vaccination to mitigate such impacts. Dr Breda Cosgrove, Consultant in Public Health Medicine for HSE Mid West, highlighted the critical role of immunisation, urging all eligible residents to avail of the vaccines promptly. Vaccinations can be obtained at GP surgeries and pharmacies, with additional services for nursing home residents and housebound individuals.

Children aged 2 to 17 years can receive the nasal flu vaccine free of charge through participating healthcare providers and school programmes. Both vaccines may be administered during the same appointment to improve convenience and protection. The HSE advises receiving the vaccines early, as it takes up to two weeks for immunity to build before flu circulation intensifies. Further details are available on the official HSE website or through local healthcare professionals.
