Teagasc programme highlights farm diversification options
For many farming families, traditional agricultural activities remain central to their business, but rising costs and changing personal circumstances are prompting consideration of alternative enterprises. Teagasc Advisor Eimear Hughes emphasises that diversification can provide additional income streams while utilising existing farm assets and skills more effectively.

This November, Teagasc will run a two-day Options Programme workshop at Mellows Campus, Athenry, designed for landowners and farmers interested in exploring alternative or complementary farm enterprises. The workshop, scheduled for the 3rd and 4th of November from 10am to 4pm, will feature presentations from rural enterprise specialists, visits to local farms with successful diversified operations, and insights into practical challenges and successes.

Participants will see a farm business incorporating a farm shop, egg and vegetable production, agroforestry, native woodland, saunas, and an event space, illustrating how diverse activities can coexist profitably. The programme also includes a visit to the BIA Innovator Centre in Athenry to learn about food enterprise development and available supports from the Local Enterprise Office. Attendance is free but booking is essential via Eimear Hughes at [email protected] or through the Teagasc website. Similar courses are offered in multiple counties nationwide.
