Ireland’s first AI laser weeder revolutionises organic farming
Lasers combined with artificial intelligence, once purely science fiction, are now transforming organic vegetable farming in Ireland. William Deasy, Specialised Vegetable Advisor, reports that Coolnagrower Organic Produce Ltd., near Birr, Co. Offaly, has become the first Irish grower to utilise the AI-driven Carbon Robotics LaserWeeder™ G2 for weed management.

Philip Draper, Managing Director and organic vegetable grower, primarily cultivates carrots, parsnips, beetroot, and potatoes. Before adopting the LaserWeeder, much of the weed control was completed manually, a labour-intensive and increasingly costly process. Philip explained that the main motivation for investing in the machine was to address labour shortages and expenses, noting its ability to operate efficiently even in Ireland's wet seasons, which is crucial for consistent crop management.

The tractor-mounted LaserWeeder uses high-resolution cameras to capture images of crop rows, with AI analysing these images to distinguish weeds from crops. It then targets the weeds with lasers, eliminating them without damaging the plants or disturbing the soil. Philip emphasised the importance of treating weeds at an early stage to maximise effectiveness, which has required adjustments to his sowing schedule to stagger plantings. Although the machine does not eradicate all weeds in a single pass, it collects data that continuously enhances its detection capabilities. This has allowed Philip to reduce manual weeding significantly and achieve cleaner crops earlier, extending market opportunities. Support from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine through grant aid was instrumental in facilitating this cutting-edge investment, securing the farm’s sustainable future over the coming decades.
