Help to Buy scheme aids almost 49,000 households
The Help to Buy Scheme has provided vital support to nearly 49,000 households since its launch in 2020, according to the latest figures shared by Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris TD.

Designed to assist first-time buyers in purchasing or building new homes, the scheme has approved 48,878 claims as of the end of July. Of these, almost 38,000 relate to newly built properties, while nearly 11,000 support self-build projects, reflecting widespread usage across every county in Ireland.

The scheme offers eligible first-time purchasers a refund of Income Tax and Deposit Interest Retention Tax (DIRT) paid over the previous four years, up to €30,000. This financial relief helps buyers secure the necessary deposit to either buy or build their home. Minister Harris emphasised the importance of the scheme in bridging the gap to homeownership, highlighting the Government’s ongoing commitment to increasing housing supply alongside practical supports like Help to Buy that make a tangible difference to families nationwide.

The key features of the Help to Buy Scheme include:
  • A refund of Income Tax and DIRT paid in Ireland over the previous four years.

  • Support capped at whichever is the lesser of €30,000, 10% of the property purchase price, or the amount of tax paid in the prior four years.

  • This initiative not only assists first-time buyers but also aims to encourage increased supply of new homes by stimulating demand.
