Farmers urged to plan for smoother farm relief work
Eoghan Byrne, Project Manager with FRS farm services, and MTU Agriculture student Cormac Harnett, who also works as an operator with FRS in Cork, recently discussed strategies for farmers seeking time off by making it easier for others to manage their farm duties.

Both Byrne and Harnett emphasise that effective planning and clear communication are essential. Providing operators with advance notice, detailed instructions on what needs doing, how to carry out tasks, and when to complete them helps avoid confusion. Useful tools include checklists, notes on specific tasks, and pre-visits by operators to familiarise themselves with the farm.

Cormac stresses the importance of having all farm equipment and materials ready before operators arrive, enabling work to begin immediately. This preparation saves time and money while reducing stress for everyone involved. Eoghan also highlights that many young operators view farm-relief work as valuable experience and a stepping stone into farm management or collaborative farming. Both agree that fostering a respectful and positive working environment is crucial for attracting and retaining the next generation of agricultural workers.
