Irish language celebration set for Brussels in December
Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, has announced that "Oireachtas na hEorpa - Glórtha Gael ag Treisiú Ceangal 1500 Bliain" will take place in Brussels on Thursday, 3 December 2026. This event is organised by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht in partnership with An tOireachtas, which is producing the programme.

The evening will present a unique fusion of sean-nós singing, dancing, music, lúibíní, and storytelling in a single performance. It traces the journey of Irish speakers to Europe over 1500 years, from the sixth-century monk Columbanus to the Irish Colleges in Paris, Salamanca, Leuven, and Rome, and onward to the Irish-speaking communities living and working in European Union Member States today. The performance will be delivered in Irish, accompanied by English and French supertitles.

As Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from July to December 2026, this marks the first Irish Presidency since Irish became an official working language of the EU in January 2022. Minister Calleary emphasised the enduring role of the Irish language in Europe, recalling how St Columbanus was regarded as a patron for those striving to build a united Europe. Máirín Nic Dhonnchadha of An tOireachtas highlighted the event’s celebration of Ireland’s rich cultural heritage and its ongoing ties with Europe through traditional and contemporary performing arts.
