Carlow County Council has proudly revealed its cultural programme supporting Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union, running from October to December 2026 as part of Cultúr 2026: Sharing Ireland's Culture. This ambitious series celebrates Carlow’s unique heritage while forging strong cultural links across Europe through a range of artistic disciplines.
The programme commenced on 2 October with European Horizons: Visual Arts on the European Stage, an exchange project with María de Huerva, Spain. Hosted at VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art and St Patrick's College, this event included workshops, a panel discussion led by Nora Hickey M'Sichili of the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, and exhibitions showcasing participating artists' work.
Following this, Harmonious Carlow honoured the prehistoric rock art of the Blackstairs Mountains on European Day of Rock Art, 9 October. It featured engaging workshops for children and adults by local artists Jules Michael and Máiréad Holohan, alongside a lecture by Professor Muiris Ó Súilleabháin. Upcoming highlights include the Storylands Exchange, a virtual writer residency with Luxembourg, and Bridge of Sound, a youth music collaboration culminating in December. The programme is supported by Culture Ireland, Creative Ireland Carlow, and coordinated locally by Carlow County Council’s Heritage, Library, and Arts offices.
