Transport committee to review Ireland’s rail expansion plans
The Joint Committee on Transport is scheduled to meet with Iarnród Éireann on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, at 9.45am in Committee Room 4, Leinster House to discuss the rail network’s current challenges and future developments.

Deputy Michael Murphy TD, Cathaoirleach of the Committee, highlighted the significant increase in rail users across Ireland, which has intensified pressure on existing services, especially during peak times. He emphasised the necessity for additional capacity to meet this unprecedented demand.

The meeting will examine major ongoing and planned investment projects, including Galway’s new Ceannt Station, the reopening of the Foynes freight line, the DART+ programme, upgrades to Cork Area Commuter Rail, the Wicklow DART extension, and progress on the Navan Railway and Western Rail lines. These initiatives are pivotal for enhancing regional development, addressing housing and population growth, improving connectivity, and advancing a sustainable transport framework. Proceedings will be accessible via the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App for Apple and Android users.
