Dublin expands secure cycle locker pilot scheme
Dublin City Council has increased the availability of secure cycle lockers in the city centre by installing an additional 24 units as part of an ongoing pilot project backed by the National Transport Authority. This expansion follows the earlier installation of 12 lockers on Capel Street and Grafton Street earlier this year.

These lockers cater to short-term parking needs, allowing cyclists to safely leave their bikes for a few hours while they explore, shop, or dine nearby. It is important to note that these facilities differ from the Bike Bunkers currently being introduced separately to provide long-term secure parking in residential neighbourhoods.

Currently, the distribution includes 6 lockers each on Capel Street and Grafton Street, along with 12 lockers located in both Jervis Street and Drury Street Car Parks. Over the next 12 months, Dublin City Council, in partnership with Bleeper who manage the trial, will assess the performance of various locker types and their associated apps, as well as gauge demand. Senior Executive Engineer Alec Dundon remarked that the pilot will help identify the most effective locations and usage patterns, informing the development of practical and reliable cycling infrastructure to encourage more people to cycle into the city for short trips. The public is invited to share their feedback via the dedicated webpage for this initiative.
