Minister of State Seán Canney has signed new regulations increasing the Fixed Charge Notice fine for e-scooter offences from €50 to €100. These regulations will be enforced by An Garda Síochána starting 18 November 2026, signalling a firm approach to unsafe e-scooter behaviour.
The updated rules also establish a new offence for failing to wear a helmet or high-visibility clothing while riding an e-scooter, reinforcing earlier regulations introduced last month. These measures respond directly to rising concerns over serious injuries, especially head trauma, among e-scooter users.
This suite of regulations completes the Government’s road safety initiatives for e-scooters approved in July 2026. Minister Canney emphasised the importance of responsible use and the promotion of active, sustainable travel, while noting that further recommendations on e-scooter safety remain under consideration.
