TFI Local Link services in Carlow, Kilkenny, and Wicklow have introduced contactless payment options, allowing passengers to use debit and credit cards, as well as digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. This move is part of the National Transport Authority’s broader initiative to modernise fare systems and enhance convenience for rural and regional travellers.
Following a successful pilot in Cavan and Monaghan, and further rollouts in areas including Louth, Meath, and Limerick, the expansion into these three counties responds to positive user feedback. Currently, contactless payments are accepted for single-journey fares, while daily and weekly tickets remain available via the Leap website and the TFI Leap Top-Up App. Traditional payment methods such as TFI Leap cards, cash, and Free Travel Cards continue to be honoured on all eligible Local Link services.
Edmund Betagh, TFI Local Link Programme Manager at the NTA, emphasised the importance of this development in making public transport more accessible and user-friendly. Jackie Meally, General Manager of TFI Local Link Carlow Kilkenny Wicklow, highlighted the flexibility contactless payment brings to passengers and underlined the positive reception from communities where the service has already been introduced.
