M50 trial of new app-based tolling technology
An innovative pilot scheme recently took place on the M50 motorway to examine the potential of app-based tolling technology. The initiative, spearheaded by Indra Sistemas and supported by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Easytrip, invited selected Easytrip customers to use a mobile application to record their journeys over five months while still operating their usual toll tags.

Throughout the trial, all toll payments continued to be processed via participants' existing Easytrip accounts, ensuring no disruption to current tolling procedures. TII's involvement reflects its ongoing dedication to fostering innovation and research within Ireland's national road network.

The project sought to gather valuable insights into the advantages, challenges, and limitations of mobile app tolling solutions in a live environment. Its findings will assist TII in understanding evolving technologies and global trends without implying any immediate changes to the current M50 toll system.
