Séamus Harnedy embraces new challenge with Ireland team
Séamus Harnedy, who recently ended his inter-county hurling career with Cork, has been invited to join the Ireland panel for the Shinty-Hurling International against Scotland. The match is scheduled for Saturday at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, and Harnedy welcomed the chance to return to the pitch and embrace this distinctive hybrid sport.

Reflecting on the invitation from coach Eamon O’Shea, Harnedy admitted he did not expect to continue playing at this level after retirement. However, advice from former participants about the game’s intense physicality and the Scots’ passionate approach convinced him to accept. He also noted the unique challenges posed by the rules, such as the prohibition on catching the ball and restrictions during ground rucks.

Looking back on his 15-year career, Harnedy expressed no regrets about stepping away despite wishing for more game time in his final season. Now 36 and engaged in building a house, he acknowledged the considerable time demands modern hurling places on players. He related to Shane O’Donnell’s recent comments on the "opportunity cost" of inter-county commitments, affirming that his own priorities have shifted after years of dedication to the sport.
