The Louth Senior Football Championship final concluded in a dramatic draw as St Mochta’s and Newtown Blues finished level at 1-15 each at the Integral Gaelic Grounds, Drogheda. Declan Byrne’s composed free from outside the arc in the closing stages brought the sides level, forcing a replay next Saturday.

Newtown Blues, under the guidance of Johnny Clerkin, dominated much of the match and appeared poised to secure their 24th title. They responded strongly after an early goal from St Mochta’s wing-back Gerry Garland, with key contributions from Ross Nally and Andy McDonnell helping them establish a five-point lead.

However, St Mochta’s resilience shone through in the final moments, as Byrne’s accuracy kept them in contention throughout the second half. Despite a last-minute free from Ciaran Downey that fell short, the sides remained inseparable, setting the stage for a highly anticipated rematch. The replay is expected to draw an even larger crowd, with both teams eager to claim the championship crown.

Newtown Blues scorers included Ross Nally (0-5, 1 free), Emmett Carolan (1-0), Jamie Kelly (1 free), and Conor Branigan (0-3). For St Mochta’s, Declan Byrne scored 0-10 (6 frees, 2 '45s'), Gerry Garland netted 1-0, with Ciaran Byrne adding 0-2.

The match was officiated by referee Stephen Johnson from Glen Emmets, and both teams fielded strong line-ups featuring notable county players, reflecting the high standard of senior football in Louth.
