Who qualifies for a free flu vaccine this winter

The Health Service Executive (HSE) South West is offering free flu vaccines this winter to individuals considered at greater risk of severe illness. These groups include older people, children aged 2 to 17, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and those with underlying health conditions. Vaccinations are available through GPs, pharmacies, HSE vaccination clinics, and some school-based programmes.

Dr Michael Hanrahan, Consultant in Public Health Medicine with HSE South West, emphasises the seriousness of influenza, stating, "Flu is not simply a bad cold; it can lead to severe illness requiring hospitalisation and can affect individuals for several weeks." The HSE is also providing vaccines directly to residents of nursing homes, other care facilities, and housebound individuals.

The optimal time to receive the vaccine is before the flu and Covid-19 seasons peak, as it takes approximately two weeks for protection to develop. Those unsure about their eligibility can contact HSELive on 1800 700 700 for guidance. A full list of qualifying health conditions is available on the official HSE website.
