Dublin City Council recently unveiled a commemorative plaque to honour Firemen Peter McArdle, Robert Malone, and Thomas Nugent, who tragically lost their lives battling a devastating fire at the former Exide Batteries premises on Pearse Street on 5 October 1936.

The ceremony, held outside the Naughton Institute at Trinity College Dublin, was attended by the Lord Mayor Daryl Barron, Chief Fire Officer, public representatives, and family members of the fallen firefighters, including Stephanie Nolan, daughter of Peter McArdle. The event also featured a poignant performance by a Dublin Fire Brigade piper and a memorial poem read by firefighter and poet Ger Devine.

This tragedy remains the greatest loss of life in a single incident for Dublin Fire Brigade. On that fateful night, believing a family was trapped inside, the firefighters entered the burning building before a series of explosions caused its collapse. The plaque serves as a lasting tribute to their bravery and sacrifice, reminding future generations of their selfless service to the city.
