The HSE has officially launched its 2026-2027 Winter Vaccination Programme in Waterford, aiming to bolster public immunity against the dual threats of influenza and COVID-19. This initiative follows a challenging previous season, which saw 25,000 confirmed flu cases, nearly 6,000 hospitalisations, and 185 intensive care admissions across the country, underscoring the critical importance of preventative measures.
Health authorities are prioritising those aged 60 and older, as well as individuals living with underlying medical conditions or compromised immune systems, for both vaccinations. Furthermore, healthcare workers, pregnant women, and children aged between 2 and 17 years are advised to receive the flu vaccine. These services are provided free of charge, with the option for patients to receive both jabs during a single clinical appointment.
Vaccinations are currently being administered through local GP surgeries and participating pharmacies. Dedicated mobile HSE teams will conduct outreach programmes for nursing home residents and housebound individuals, while specific clinics have been established for healthcare staff. Parents of children aged 2 to 17 may also access the nasal flu vaccine via school-based programmes. Dr Carmel Mullaney, Regional Director of Public Health, has urged all eligible citizens to prioritise their appointments to safeguard their health and that of their community. Further details regarding local availability are accessible on the official HSE website.
