A vibrant ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening of Swords Celtic FC’s new all-weather pitch on 3 October, a landmark achievement for the club and the broader Swords community. The 11-a-side facility, funded through a partnership between Fingal County Council and the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport under the Community Sports Facilities Fund, will transform how players of all ages and abilities train and compete throughout the year. Local families, volunteers, and young athletes gathered to celebrate a project that promises to leave a lasting legacy in the area.
The ceremony was led by Fingal Mayor Cllr. Tony Murphy, who was joined by Swords Celtic Chairperson Frank Kilbride, Fingal County Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly, and Minister Darragh O’Brien. In a heartfelt address, Mayor Murphy highlighted the club’s proud tradition of inclusivity and player development, telling young athletes that the pitch was theirs to shape their futures. “Every journey starts somewhere,” he said, “and for many, it begins on pitches like this.” Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly praised the club’s vision and the collaborative efforts of Fingal’s Sports Office, including Director Dave Storey, whose work has empowered local clubs to enhance their facilities and expand sporting opportunities across the county.
Minister O’Brien, who attended the event, emphasised the significance of the investment in both sport and community cohesion. “This pitch is a testament to what can be achieved when local and national government work hand in hand with dedicated community organisations,” he remarked. The celebrations concluded with group photographs and shared moments of pride, as club members and supporters reflected on a milestone that will inspire generations of footballers in Swords.
