New national hub launched to bolster Irish health security
The Chief Medical Officer, Professor Mary Horgan, has officially launched the Evidence Synthesis Hub for Health Security Ireland (ESHSI). This national programme is designed to bolster the state's capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from a variety of emerging health threats, ranging from infectious disease outbreaks to environmental hazards. By centralising national and international expertise, the hub will ensure that government policy and Health Service Executive (HSE) decisions are underpinned by the most robust scientific data available.

Speaking at the launch, Professor Horgan emphasised that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vital need for high-quality, timely evidence to guide critical decision-making. Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD echoed this sentiment, describing the hub as a significant advancement in Ireland's resilience. She noted that the government remains committed to investing in the partnerships and capabilities necessary to safeguard public health against rapidly evolving risks, ensuring the country remains proactive rather than reactive.

Scientific lead Professor Declan Devane, who serves as the Principal Investigator at the ESHSI, explained that the hub functions by sourcing, weighing, and clarifying global research to provide policymakers with immediate, actionable answers. By bridging the gap between academic research and public policy, the hub aims to unify skilled professionals across Irish universities and public agencies. Further information regarding the operational scope and ongoing initiatives of the hub is available on the official Department of Health website.
