New consultant strengthens neonatal care in Mid West
The Health Service Executive (HSE) Mid West has announced the appointment of Dr Rachel Mullaly as Consultant Neonatologist at University Maternity Hospital Limerick (UMHL), marking a significant enhancement to neonatal services in the area.

Dr Mullaly’s expertise in neonatal haemodynamics, which focuses on blood flow and heart function in newborns, will bring valuable skills to UMHL’s established neonatology team. Her role will strengthen specialist care for babies and their families throughout the Mid West region. She has presented her research at both national and international forums, underscoring her position as a leading expert in this field.

This appointment follows a substantial €9.7 million investment in 2025 that saw the completion of a two-storey extension and refurbishment of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UMHL, creating a modern, improved environment for infants, parents, and staff. Dr Mullaly holds an MSc in Neonatology from the University of Southampton and a PhD in Neonatal Haemodynamics from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Having recently returned from advanced fellowship training in Melbourne, Australia, she is eager to contribute to the hospital’s continued excellence in neonatal care while also pursuing her passion for classical violin music in Limerick.
