Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary TD has inaugurated Intreo Disability Work and Skills Week, a nationwide series of events scheduled from 19 to 23 October. This initiative aims to foster connections between disabled individuals and employers, training providers, and workplace support services.
Events will be hosted across various locations including Roscommon, Mullingar, Buncrana, Cork, Ballinasloe, Navan, Claremorris, and Drogheda. These gatherings will feature multi-sector job and training fairs where attendees can engage directly with employers recruiting in sectors such as retail, healthcare, hospitality, IT, administration, and customer service.
Throughout the week, participants will benefit from employer and employee spotlight sessions that showcase the advantages of inclusive employment, alongside practical workshops on preparing for work and thriving in the workplace. The programme also highlights Intreo’s supports like the Wage Subsidy Scheme, Work and Access, and the Work Placement Experience Programme, all designed to assist disabled jobseekers and employers.
Minister Calleary emphasised the importance of breaking down barriers that have historically hindered disabled individuals’ access to employment, expressing his commitment to creating a more inclusive labour market. He encouraged attendees to embrace the opportunities presented during the week and to engage in meaningful conversations that could open doors to sustainable employment.
Operations Director at MrPrice, Edel McSorley, praised inclusive employment for enriching their teams and urged other employers to focus on candidates’ strengths. Meanwhile, Sylvia Kennedy, owner of Treats by Sylvia, shared how participating in the Work Placement Scheme has empowered individuals to gain confidence and skills, benefiting both employees and the wider workplace.
