Minister for Mental Health and Government Chief Whip, Mary Butler TD, has unveiled Ireland's inaugural National Standards for Community Residential Mental Health Centres, marking a significant advancement in community mental health care.
Presented at the Mental Health Commission’s conference themed "A 20/20 Vision of Ireland's Mental Health System," the Standards establish clear national criteria for governance, staffing, and service delivery. They prioritise residents' rights, experiences, and recovery, offering transparency and consistency for residents, families, providers, and regulators alike.
Developed through comprehensive consultation involving individuals with lived experience, families, advocates, clinicians, and researchers, the Standards align with the forthcoming Mental Health Act 2026. This legislation will broaden the Mental Health Commission’s oversight to include community-based services, supported by dedicated funding in Budget 2027. The initiative complements ongoing investment in multidisciplinary teams and community supports, fostering meaningful, independent lives for those accessing mental health services.
