New 12-bed unit opens at Sligo hospice
North West Hospice in Sligo has proudly unveiled its new 12-bed inpatient unit, marking a significant enhancement in palliative care provision across the North West. This state-of-the-art development, officially opened on 2 November 2026, reflects a patient-focused approach, embodying compassion, respect, and excellence in its design and facilities.

Construction began in March 2024, with an emphasis on creating a supportive environment that honours patient dignity and privacy. Initially, eight beds will be operational, transitioning to full capacity of twelve beds to better serve the community. The expansion also includes upgraded spaces for the multidisciplinary clinical team, ensuring comprehensive, expert care continues seamlessly.

Looking ahead, the second phase will transform the existing inpatient unit into a day service facility, enabling outpatient reviews and further supporting the multidisciplinary team. This phase is scheduled for completion by mid-2027. Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill praised the new unit as a vital advancement in regional palliative care, highlighting the importance of single-occupancy rooms for patient privacy and family involvement. Operational Lead Nuala Ginnelly and HSE General Manager Emma Ball expressed gratitude to the local communities and staff whose dedication and generosity made this achievement possible, reinforcing the hospice’s vital role in delivering dignified end-of-life care.
