Telecom sector tests severe weather readiness
The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport recently chaired Exercise Lugh, a pioneering emergency planning exercise designed to test the telecommunications sector’s resilience to severe weather. This tabletop simulation replicated the impact of a severe winter storm akin to Storm Éowyn, marking the Department’s inaugural terrestrial emergency preparedness drill.

Exercise Lugh was conducted in collaboration with the telecommunications industry and formed part of the Telecommunications Response and Resilience Group’s (T-RRG) workplan. Established in 2025, the T-RRG aims to enhance the reliability and availability of Ireland’s telecommunications infrastructure by fostering coordinated emergency responses between government, industry, and regulatory bodies.

Since its inception, the group has made significant strides in developing processes and emergency plans to manage severe weather impacts. Exercise Lugh offered a crucial opportunity to validate and fine-tune these procedures just as the 2026/27 winter season commenced, ensuring a robust national response framework is in place.
