Mid West oncology initiative transforms cancer care delivery successfully
A pioneering collaborative initiative between University Hospital Limerick Cancer Services and the regional Community Intervention Team has fundamentally transformed cancer care across the Mid West. Operating seven days a week from local hubs in Limerick, Newcastle West, Ennis, Nenagh, and Thurles, the nurse-led service successfully delivered almost 10,000 community oncology interventions, providing essential treatments such as blood tests, pump disconnections, and central line care outside traditional hospital environments.

This patient-centred model has reaped immense benefits for individuals like Thurles resident John O’Dwyer, who praised the arrangement for eliminating stressful hospital commutes and allowing him to remain close to home while caring for his wife. The initiative's remarkable impact recently earned national acclaim at the HSE Integrated Healthcare Conference, where Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll-MacNeill commended the programme as an exemplary blueprint for nationwide replication.

Clinical leaders attribute this triumph to the exceptional dedication of nursing staff and seamless cooperation across hospital and community sectors. While year-on-year growth underscores surging demand and highlights the necessity for sustained workforce investment, the initiative continues to set a shining standard for compassionate, accessible healthcare delivery throughout the region.
